Sheryl Crow
100 Miles From Memphis
On her new album Sheryl Crow goes back to her roots and delivers a number of blues and soul tracks influenced by the music she grew up listening to.
While her singles have been staples on popular radio since her debut, this is actually the first Sheryl Crow album I’ve fully listened to and I must saw it impressed me.
On 100 Miles From Memphis, Crow drops her pop persona and tackles a genre that is pretty sacred to some. Now I’ll admit I’m not much of a Memphis Blues expert but I think she does a pretty decent job.
Long-time fans expecting her normal poppy sound won’t be disappointed either though as there are a couple of tracks that bring her earlier material to mind. The album also includes a cover of the Jackson 5′s “Want you Back” as a bonus track.
The thing that surprised me the most is how Crow was able to get her voice so high, as it sounds identical to a young Michael Jackson. In the end this album might not reach the popularity of some of her earlier releases but long time fans who pick it up will be getting a hidden gem.
Highlights include: Our Love Is Fading, Summer Day and 100 Miles From Memphis.
Mike Posner
31 Minutes To Takeoff
With a top 10 single already in the bag, American pop singer Mike Posner’s debut album will more than likely produce a few more hits before the year is out.
Posner’s musical style isn’t far from your regular top 40 pop music that all kind of sounds the same to this reviewer.
While Posner’s singing and song writing abilities can’t be questioned, his musical style is the equivalent of a jujube; somewhat enjoyable, a little forgettable and hard to distinguish from the other jujubes in the bag.
There’s a modern electronic feel to his music that lands somewhere between Justin Timberlake and Kid Cudi, which should be appealing to some.
The subject of Posner’s songs all seem to centre on your regular pop fare; relationships and girls of all sorts.
If you’re a fan of pop music and are looking for something new to bop around to, Posner’s debut 31 Minutes To Takeoff will make a great addition to your summer playlist, but if you like a bit of substance with your music you might want to take a pass.
Highlights include: Cooler Than Me; Do U Wanna? and Synthesizer.
The Venz
The Plot Thickens
Originally from Rogersville but now calling Moncton their home base, The Venz are a hard rock/metal band that bring back the good old days of heavy music.
Featuring just pure rock without any studio wizardry to increase their sound, the album is pretty raw but in the end it’s kind of a breath of fresh air. With so many over produced acts coming out it’s nice to hear just guitar, bass, drums and vocals. With a mix of hard rock and heavy metal guitar solos, the band reminded me of Alice In Chains and their unique sound.
With 22 tracks on one CD you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck with The Plot Thickens and who isn’t trying to find a good deal in these hard economic times? With the number of hard rock and metal fans in our city The Venz should increase their fanbase with The Plot Thickens.
Highlights include: Can’t Remember, Half The Battle and Flawless Theory.
